Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, therapeutic massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to promote the removal of toxins, excess fluid, and waste from the body’s tissues.
Developed in the 1930s, it uses light, rhythmic strokes and gentle pressure to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues and back toward the heart. Unlike traditional massage, manual lymphatic drainage focuses on the surface layers of the skin and is very light, as the lymphatic vessels lie close to the skin’s surface.
Your medical specialist should regularly check how well your treatment is working, looking at whether the tissues are softening and how much the swelling is going down.
