Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, therapeutic massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to promote the removal of toxins, excess fluid, and waste from the body’s tissues.

MLD is commonly used to reduce swelling (lymphedema), improve circulation, and enhance the immune system’s efficiency. It can also aid in recovery from surgery, injury, or conditions that cause fluid retention, such as certain cancers or chronic venous insufficiency. The technique is highly effective for reducing inflammation and supporting detoxification, making it beneficial for people with compromised lymphatic function or those seeking a general boost in their body’s ability to heal and regenerate.

Developed in the 1930s, it uses light, rhythmic strokes and gentle pressure to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues and back toward the heart. Unlike traditional massage, manual lymphatic drainage focuses on the surface layers of the skin and is very light, as the lymphatic vessels lie close to the skin’s surface.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be beneficial and is a scientifically recognised solution for some medical issues, most notably for individuals with conditions such as lymphedema, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

Your medical specialist should regularly check how well your treatment is working, looking at whether the tissues are softening and how much the swelling is going down.
